Krisp vs Descript: the specialist against the suite
One corner does a single job in real time; the other packs an entire production studio and does the noise job somewhere in aisle four. Scoring it took four rounds and one confession: they’re only half in the same sport.
Krisp
The house benchmark: two-way noise cancellation on the device, in front of any call app, Windows and macOS. Free hour daily, $8/month annual after that.
Descript
A transcript-first audio/video editing suite; its Studio Sound pass rebuilds speech to drop the room. Free tier: 60 minutes of media processing per month; paid from $16/mo a month, annual.

The half-shared job
The overlap is recorded audio: Descript’s Studio Sound genuinely rescues rough recordings — the community wisdom about keeping the strength nearer 60% than 100% is sound — while Krisp’s value lives almost entirely in the call itself. So the card splits by ring: live rounds are a walkover for the red corner, the recorded round goes blue, and price depends entirely on which job you’re actually paying for.
The card
Rounds are scored boxing-style — 10 to the round’s winner, 9 to the loser, 8 for a dominant round, 10–10 when I genuinely can’t split them. A dash means a corner didn’t answer the bell for that round. Totals are arithmetic; so is the decision.
| Round | Krisp | Descript |
|---|---|---|
| R1 · Live calls | 10 | — |
| Referee’s note: Descript never enters this ring — nothing in the suite touches a call in progress. | ||
| R2 · Recorded cleanup | 8 | 10 |
| Referee’s note: Studio Sound takes the round on rescue quality; Krisp's recording cleanup is a sideline, not the act. | ||
| R3 · Cost for the noise job | 10 | 8 |
| Referee’s note: If noise is the whole errand, $8 against a $16-and-up suite subscription is a wide round for the red corner. | ||
| R4 · Everything else in the bag | 9 | 10 |
| Referee’s note: Descript brings a full transcript-first editor; Krisp brings meeting notes. If you edit shows weekly, this round matters more than my card can say. | ||
| Totals | 37 | 28 |
Read the card by your calendar, not the totals
The 37–28 total flatters the specialist because the card has more live rounds than editing rounds — that’s honest for most readers, who arrive with a calls problem. But if your week is edit-shaped, invert it: a $16-and-up suite that also cleans audio beats an $8 tool that doesn’t edit. The tape doesn’t lie; it just needs your diary next to it. Ringside questions
- Is Descript’s Studio Sound better than Krisp?
- At repairing finished recordings, yes — that round goes blue. On a live call, Descript doesn’t compete at all. They’re adjacent tools, not substitutes.
- Which is cheaper?
- For the noise job alone: Krisp — $8/month annual against Descript’s $16/month annual entry tier. For someone who also needs an editor, Descript’s price buys the whole workshop and the comparison flips.
